Places you must see
Eksjö and its surroundings offer a large selection of popular destinations, all well worth a visit. Experience classic Astrid Lindgren environments, and mighty Skurugata or enjoy freshly made caramels in Mariannelund. Below we have listed both destinations suitable for families with children and those looking for a real adventure!
Eksjö’s old town
Experience the unique wooden town with its beautiful courtyards, alleys and it’s picturesque city center. Here are the small shops that you cannot find in other towns.
The moose park
6 miles north (a 10-minute drive) is Skullaryd with a fantastic moose park. Here you can join an exciting tractor safari and experience the animals in their natural environment. Try feeding moose and deer and you will have the opportunity to meet the wonderful animals up close.
Skurugata and Skuruhatt
Skurugata is located 4 miles northeast of Eksjö and is a street about 875 yards long. The narrow street is between 22 and 79 feet wide and has steep walls that are up to 9 feet high. It is a powerful experience to stand at the bottom of Skurugata and look up at the rock walls with all their mystery and beauty.
Lakes for swimming
- Prästängsbadet is located in the middle of the town next to a camping site.
- Rolandsdamm approximately 1640 yards north of the center.
- Långanäsbadet is approximately 1,5 miles south of the center.
Candy makers of Mariannelund
Here you can watch skilled bakers at work making everything by hand according to passed down, secret recipes. Don’t miss the shop where you can stash up on sweets with avantgarde flavors.
The moovie village of Mariannelund
Here you get to experience filming environments from classic children’s films such as Emil in Lönneberga, Seacrow Island, and Pippi Longstocking. The exhibition is created in the spirit of Astrid Lindgren. One can sing to movie scores and create own mobile movies. A happy exploration for both young and old.
Katthult
Approximately 1 mile from Mariannelund in Gibberyd you’ll find Katthult, where the films about the master mischief Emil in Lönneberga were filmed. Get ready for some heavy nostalgia in this well-kept farm.
Bullerbyn
Barely 6 miles east of Mariannelund is the real Bullerbyn village. Astrid Lindgren’s father grew up here and it is the village’s three houses that she describes in her books.
Astrid Lindgrens värld
3 miles eastwards lies one of Sweden’s most popular family attractions; Astrid Lindgren’s World, where you can meet Karlsson on the Roof, Pippi Longstocking, Emil in Lönneberga, The Brothers Lionheart and Ronja the Robber’s daughter; all in their specific story telling environments.
Kleva gruva
Located just outside of Vetlanda we recommend a day trip into a deserted mine. Expect a thrilling excursion for a bit older children and grown-ups. Equipped with a flashlight, helmet, and map, you can explore the hard work carried out by early excavations. It is rather important to bring a warm sweater and rubber boots (available to borrow on-site) as the environment is quite cold and wet all year round.
